House moving tips

Planning and preparing for your move is vital and should be started approximately 4-5 weeks before moving day.

This will ensure you have time to:

1. Start sorting through your belongings and arrange to throw away, sell or give to charity any items you no longer want or need. The less you move the better – less items will mean less cost, especially if you are moving over a long distance.

2. Begin collecting boxes and newspaper (for packing). Ask friends, relatives or local businesses for any cardboard boxes they would otherwise throw out.

3. Arrange a moving quote. If you are moving yourself, make an estimate of costs and expenses (including mail redirection) and write it down. This will become a valuable guide in the coming weeks.

If you are using professional movers, arrange a quote from at least three different companies. Some removalists may want to inspect your belongings and access routes before quoting a price. It’s also a good idea to ask them for a fixed price AND a cost per hour as these can vary greatly.

Another element to consider is whether you will pack belongings yourself or whether you would prefer a removalist do this for you.

4. Book airline, train or bus tickets and accommodation if they are required as part of your move. Booking well in advance may mean you can take advantage of travel “specials”.

5. Stop by your local post office and pick up a “change of address kit” which outlines all the things you need to consider when changing your address. The kit contains postcards to send people informing them of your new address, a fridge magnet checklist and an Australia Post mail redirection form.
